Seeds and Seeds – Getting Ready For Spring – Pt 1

dscn0717After hearing about Edible Estates I decided I must have a food garden this year somehow.
I got a bit into the whole gardening thing last year with a few trips to Bachman’s and a helping thin out a friend’s mom’s jungle of a yard. From these adventures I now have double white lilacs, a rose bush, mock orange, a bunch of raspberry bushes, and a bunch of assorted stuff which is mostly flowers or “texture”.

This year I decided that I need to have food. I have been mulling over some ideas on how to best do this in an aesthetically pleasing manner. I also want to somehow do a food co-op, so I am not the only schmuck out there weeding the damn thing and can maybe recoup the cost of some of the water. However, for the time being, I need to get some of the seeds started.

To get things kicked of, Arika bought a pack of herbs and flowers a few weeks ago. Yesterday she bought an awesome little greenhouse starter kit from a hardware store with 36 starter dirt pod things. This was actually pretty neat, but probably too expensive for the grand scale I am looking at. So tonight, Arika built a bunch of little greenhouses.

First, we went to Menards and bought a bag of potting soil for $5. Then Arika took a bunch of egg cartons that were piling up and cut off the tops. She then filled those with soil and plopped a couple plastic tupperware bins over the top to act as the green house. Sweet. I should do time lapse photography of the plants, but probably won’t – ha.
