Propeller Share Story Feature and (very) Unofficial Stats

At work last week we launched a “share story” tool. It is a tool to allow you to share a story with up to 25 each of mutual friends on the site,  your groups, and e-mails. I worked on the original version for Netscape.com as well as the new one that integrated the groups aspect for Propeller.com. The feature had been noticeably absent since the re-launch of the site over the summer. I hate to pat myself on the back, but it is a pretty slick feature.

Tom discussed in the official propeller blog last week when we launched it. Screen shot of the UI below.

Anywho, last night Tom called me last night after work to get some stats on the tool since its launch last week. I did some digging.

Here are the usage stats I pulled up. All are ball park figures since I am not at liberty to give exact stats …

  • Thousands of people have shared stories with friends (up to 25 friends per “share”)
  • Around a quarter Million site members have received a shared story.
  • Tens of thousands of groups have received a shared/watched story.
  • We don’t have an email stat because we do not record the address of people with which a story is shared via email. I’m actually glad we do not store these emails for privacy sake.

The next step would be to figure out how these numbers helped views, comments, votes for stories that were shared, but that is a battle for another day.  I am pretty excited by these numbers however. It is nice to see tools you make used. However, it couldn’t be done without all the other efforts from the rest of the Propeller team. You guys rock.
