Hi Mike. Actually, a year later, I do mostly cardio and cross training and don't lift as much anymore. I dropped 30lbs but also feel I lost a lot of muscle in the process... most noted in my overall strength.

I know this is an old post but I think there is some pretty bad advice here.

For starters blainegarrett, please dont say by simply going to the gym you have gained 15lbs weight because that is physically impossible. Your diet would have had to change to compensate for the excess calorie burning, unless somehow your body defies the laws of physics!

guesswho11, which "steriods" do you you think he should not "poison" his body with ... hopefully not the same Arnie did, correct?

Arnie was also NEVER 4% body fat, just under 7%. He is also not 6'2"!! More like a tad over 6'. Todays bodybuilders are on about 3% "Chris Vetrano", and they are at literally at deaths door on stage (oxygen tanks backstage). 4% BF is not something the average person wants to experience!

I would be curious to see how blainegarrett is getting on after 1 1/2 years after this post in the gym. Have you matched Arnies weight and physique yet? My guess is no, unless that was you onstage at last months Olympia lol.

Seriously though ... I roll my eyes when I hear people who work out a few days a week at the gym for a few months and are confused about why they dont look the same as some of the greatest bodybuilders in history. My biggest gripe with this is not achieving ultimate excellence but setting the bar too high, then they give up. I would love to look like Arnie back in the 80's, but I know it will never happen so I aim for more of a rocky 3 look, not that it would be easy!!!!

As for the UFC fighters, you're seeing them after they've cut weight for the fight. Most walk around at 20-30 pounds heavier than the weight they're listed at when they step in the ring.

I always wonder about stuff like this in the gym.. I have great form and I always pay extreme attention to all the exercises to make sure that (to the best of my knowledge) i am doing them to get the best final results.. im always concerned though that if i drop my weight a bit that i wont be able to eventually get my weight higher and or get bigger (since my body wont think the weight is to much and not seeing a need to grow??)

I figure I will comment on this as I have a bit of information. As you can see, Arnold is incredibly lean in these photos. Most people don't realize how much fat they need to lose in order to look like this. 10% bodyfat is actually very close to being as lean as an on-stage bodybuilder. 6% is probably a good number, especially for someone arnold's size. For an amateur, less is probably achievable. This is because muscle also contains fat.

Water is also a variable you should take into consideration. If Arnold were not manipulating his water levels he wouldn't look so lean and "dry".

also the heart problem with arnie was nothing to do with his weight training or diet, it was a family problem that his father also had and died from! as for the weight thing he weighed 250lbs in his prime of pure muscle, he was 4% body fat and 6ft2 ! yes muscle weighs more than fat but he was nearly pure muscle, do you know what your body fat is?

Lifting a ton of wait isn't going to get you more definition that is wat gives u bulk, to get better def you need to lift with a lighter weight and do more reps per set, this is wat i use to do but i wanted to be a bit more bulky so i added more weight and it worked, i think with alot of people it works different cus i have always been big built naturally so gaining bulk for me wasn't to hard!

if what your doing is working for you tho then thats great and i wish you the best of luck :D
