Old Classmate Leah Culver started Pownce? wtf?
While talking to Joe Tower earlier this evening, we were talking about web 2.0 sites. He mentioned Pownce and said that he went to highschool with the founder, Leah Culver. The name rung a bell, so I asked if she went to the U of M. Lo and behold, it was the same Leah I knew from CSci classes. It is good to see fellow class mates are doing cool stuff when there are so many I know not doing very cool stuff (think office space and burger flipping).
I think my favorite Leah memory is when we were both working for Carlson School of Management doing AV work for the MIS lecture series. We were recording some guy doing a presentation on Digital Rights Management. After asking some thoughtful questions, we got invited to lunch with the speaker and the MIS Heads. We sat quietly while they chatted about the changing world of technology. Then they started asking us questions since we were CSci kids and probably were all for DRM and controlling the Internets. We started harassing the DRM guy. He started saying something about capitalizing on Myspace and social networks, and we gave him some shit. We were not invited back for lunch again. Speaking of DRM, it is funny to see that she started a file-sharing site. haha. Go Leah.
Oh and apparently she made news when she sold ad space on her mac to raise money to buy it.
